En stor dag i museets historie
I dag, tirsdag 21. mai 2024, har vi hatt æren av å motta HRH The Princess Royal, Princess Anne av Storbritannia på Vemork og på Mæl stasjon.
På museet ble prinsessen, som blant annet hadde med den britiske ambassadøren i Norge, Jan Thompsom i følget sitt, hilst velkommen av Tinns ordfører Kathrine Haatvedt, nestleder i NIAs styre Irene Bordier Haukedal og direktør i museet Anna Hereid. Under besøket møtte hun også fagpersoner i og utenfor museet, noen av museets viktigste støttespillere samt etterkommere av flere av de modige unge menneskene som deltok i ulike operasjoner eller aktiviteter knyttet til operasjonene under andre verdenskrig.
Vi møtte en svært interessert prinsesse som var nysgjerrig på den enorme industrihistorien i Telemark, kjemi, rettferdighetskamp.
En inspirerende dag
Før prinsessen la ned blomster på minnesmerket for operasjon Gunnerside på Vemork rakk hun også å møte Dag Alveng og hans fantastiske verk fra utstillingen Tungt Vann og Dype Daler som vi viste ved Telemark kunstmuseum i 2021. Fantastiske Malin Røysland Skårberg avsluttet det hele med sin vakre stemme før vi kunne sende prinsessen og hele hennes følge trygt avgårde etter opplevelsesrike timer på Vemork.
En fantastisk dag som ga inspirasjon og ettertanke og kanskje noen ambisjoner om å ta historiene våre ut i det store utland på andre måter enn bare film.

We are beyond honored to welcome Your Royal Highness The Princess Royal to Vemork today. This visit is a profound reminder of the enduring importance of remembering our shared history, particularly the courageous, spectacular, daring, innovative and at times challenging Anglo-Norwegian cooperation during World War II. Standing here at Vemork, in the ruins of the Heavy Water Cellar—a site of vital importance in a race perceived as crucial to the outcome of World War II—this significance becomes especially evident.
Her Royal Highness’ commitment to preserving the memory of these significant events ensures that the bravery and sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom are never forgotten. In a world that constantly evolves, the lessons from our past remain crucial in guiding our future.
I would also like to thank all of you present here today and other friends of this museum for supporting our mission which in essence is all about securing a world where democracy, righteousness, freedom of speech and freedom in general are the values we must be willing to sacrifice everything for. In a world with arising conflicts that has already and continues to challenge these values that we perhaps take for granted to easily this is especially important.
By honoring the legacy of Vemork and its role in the war, we reinforce the values of resilience and collaboration that are as relevant today as they were then. The Princess Royal’s engagement in this endeavor helps to inspire new generations to appreciate the cost of peace and the strength found in unity.
Before I Invite The Princess Royal to say a few words and unveil a plaque that commemorates this visit I would like to say Thank you so much, Your Royal Highness, for your dedication to keeping this history alive. Your visit today not only commemorates our past but also strengthens the bonds between our nations as we look forward to a future built on the foundations of mutual respect and remembrance. It also encourage all of us to keep researching, develop and continue telling these stories and the true relevance for generations to come, thank you!
