The rich artistic and cultural heritage of Telemark has a national value. The Telemark Gallery shows changing exhibitions with current contemporary art and historical exhibitions with art from the Norwegian Golden Age. In a beautiful industrial hall from the last century you can experience inspiring art exhibitions, enjoy a pleasant visit to a café and an extensive museum shop.
In the building you will also find the World Heritage Center, Notodden department.
The museum’s main focus is on Telemark’s role in art history, the Norwegian golden age in the 19th century, and on the transition from peasant society to modern Norway in the early 20th century. The Telemark Gallery facilitates the production of new contemporary art based on the museum’s collections and thematic areas of responsibility. We seek to reconcile international relevance with our regional art history.
The art collection contains images from the emergence of power development and industry in Telemark, and provides an important and historically relevant cross-section of Norwegian socially engaged art. The collection also contains modern visual art with connections to industry and innovation, such as Mathias Faldbakken and Per Berntsen. A large part of the collection is a gift given by the Terje Bergstad Foundation.
A number of lectures and concerts are arranged in the Telemark Gallery. Telemarksgalleriet also has an active friends association that arranges lectures and other events in connection with the current exhibitions in Telemarksgalleriet.
