Operation Gunnerside was a success. Under the leadership of Joachim Rønneberg, the saboteurs managed to sneak into the heavy water cellar and blow up the heavy water plant.

The saboteurs were commissioned by the British organization Special Operations Executive (SOE). They were part of the company «Norwegian Independent Company 1», later called Kompani Linge. Heavy water was an important part of the German nuclear project and the Allies feared that Nazi Germany was ahead of them in the race to build a nuclear bomb.

The saboteurs who carried out the operation on the night of 28 February escaped without being detected by German guards. No one was injured and no lives were lost. This operation is one of the most famous sabotage operations from World War II.
